When you’re next visiting Henstent be sure to pop on over to Lake Vyrnwy which is a great day out for walks, picnics, cycling and canoeing.
Lake Vyrnwy is approximately 20 minutes drive from Henstent and is one place you need to visit (apart from Pistyll Rhaeadr that is). The lake is nestled between forested mountains and features a gothic tower on the water – something you won’t forget in a hurry. After driving through rolling farmland and country lanes this majestical place is the last thing you would expect.
Lake Vyrnwy is quite vast in that the road that goes around its circumference is around 13 miles long – long enough for a marathon. In fact, some avid runners compete in Lake Vyrnwy’s Half Marathon every year.
Birdwatching and Walks at RSPB
RSPB manages the nature reserve that runs around the lake where there is plenty of wildlife to be found. When visiting the area we recommend that you head-on into the village to the RSPB shop. If you are with the family don’t forget to ask to borrow a kids explorer pack which include bark rubbing and scavenger hunts as well as books and even binoculars. To help you spot the local wildlife they have created nature trails and have leaflets to help you out too!
Cycling & Bike Hire
The flat circular round that goes around the lake is perfect for cycling – and plenty of stop off points along the way too.
When cycling around the lake, especially in the summer months, it can be quite challenging. Be sure to look out for motorists on the way. If you are fortunate to go out of season though the road is usually quite quiet.
Don’t have a bike or haven’t brought them with you? Don’t worry, you can still go cycling. Head on over to the Artisans Coffee Shop where you can hire bikes if needed.
Canoeing & Watersports
Plenty is going on at Lake Vyrnwy including sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Hire is available at certain times of the year (from Easter to October) which can include wetsuits too if needed! Brought your own canoe? No problem. Just be wary that thereis a fee to put your own canoe on the lake.
